Dobanki Canopy Walk
Sundarbans' Most Unique Forest Experience — walk 500 metres above a live tiger reserve on India's most extraordinary elevated wildlife walkway, where spotted deer graze directly beneath your feet.
Stroll Through the Mangrove Canopy — With Wild Tigers Below
The Sundarbans is a land of mystery, adventure, and extraordinary natural beauty. Among all its remarkable experiences, the Dobanki Canopy Walk stands alone as the most unique — a 500-metre elevated fenced walkway built 20 feet above the forest floor of an active tiger reserve.
Unlike a boat safari where you observe the forest from the water, the Dobanki Canopy Walk puts you physically inside the forest — at canopy height, surrounded by branches, birdsong, and the knowledge that the animals below can sense your presence but cannot reach you. It is an experience that makes the hair stand on the back of your neck in the very best way.
Spotted deer in herds of 20 or more are an almost guaranteed sighting directly below the walkway. Wild boar root through the mud. Monitor lizards bask on the roots. And the faint possibility of a Royal Bengal Tiger at the treeline keeps every visitor absolutely alert for the entire 500-metre circuit.

Four Reasons Dobanki Is Like Nowhere Else
Walk Above a Live Tiger Reserve
The Dobanki Canopy Walk is built entirely within the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve — one of the most protected ecosystems on Earth. You are walking at canopy level, above a forest floor where Royal Bengal Tigers, spotted deer, wild boar, and monitor lizards move freely. The fence is the only boundary between you and the wild.
India's Rarest Wildlife Walkway
There is nothing quite like the Dobanki Canopy Walk anywhere else in India. While other reserves offer jeep safaris or boat rides, Dobanki gives you the sensation of being physically inside the forest — breathing the same air as the animals, hearing every branch crack and every bird call at close range.
A Photographer's Dream Angle
Shooting wildlife from 20 feet above the forest floor — looking straight down on a herd of spotted deer or across a canopy of mangroves — produces photographs unlike anything you can get from a boat or vehicle. The elevated perspective against morning forest light is extraordinary.
Canopy-Level Birdwatching
The walkway puts you at eye level with the Sundarbans tree canopy — exactly where kingfishers, pittas, and raptors live. Brown-winged Kingfisher, Mangrove Pitta, Brahminy Kite, and Lesser Adjutant Stork are all regularly spotted from the walkway without any neck strain.
Your 500-Metre Journey — Section by Section
Entry Platform
The walkway begins at a raised entry platform at Dobanki forest station. Naturalist guides brief visitors on safety protocols, what to look for, and silent observation etiquette before entry.
The Open Canopy Stretch
The first 200 metres run through open mangrove canopy — maximum sunlight, maximum birdwatching. This section overlooks a broad grassland clearing where deer concentrate, especially in the morning.
The Enclosed Forest Tunnel
The middle section runs through denser closed canopy where the walkway feels like a tunnel of green. Monitor lizards and kingfishers are concentrated here. Tiger pugmarks are most commonly found on the soft mud below this section.
The Viewing Platform
At the midpoint, a wider viewing platform allows the group to pause, scan 360° across the canopy, and photograph without congestion. Naturalists use this point to explain the ecology visible from above.
Return Loop
The walkway completes a loop back to the entry point, giving visitors a second pass through each section from the opposite direction — often revealing wildlife missed on the outward walk.
Wildlife You'll Find Below Your Feet
The forest floor beneath the Dobanki walkway is one of the most wildlife-rich patches in the entire Sundarbans — undisturbed by human footfall and fully active at ground level while visitors watch from above.
Spotted Deer (Chital)
Herds of 20–50 chital regularly graze on the open grassland directly beneath the walkway — one of the most reliable wildlife sightings in all of Sundarbans.
Wild Boar
Family groups of wild boar root through the muddy forest floor beneath the walkway. They are fearless and will often pass directly under visitors.
Bengal Monitor Lizard
Monitor lizards up to 1.5 metres long bask on the raised roots and boardwalk supports below. The elevated view makes them easy to spot and photograph.
Royal Bengal Tiger
Tiger pugmarks are regularly found on the mudflats surrounding the walkway. Occasional sightings of tigers at the treeline from the elevated platform have been reported by naturalist guides.
Brown-winged Kingfisher
Endemic to the Sundarbans, this brilliantly coloured kingfisher perches at canopy level — exactly where the walkway sits — making Dobanki the best place in the world to photograph it.
Brahminy Kite
A sacred bird in Hindu tradition, the rust-and-white Brahminy Kite hunts along the creek edges visible from the walkway, providing dramatic aerial wildlife action.

Planning Your Visit to Dobanki
How to Reach Dobanki
Dobanki is accessible only by boat through the Sundarban Tiger Reserve creek network — approximately 2–3 hours from Sajnekhali by motorised houseboat. All Go Sundarban Tour packages visiting Dobanki handle all boat transfers.
Which Packages Include Dobanki
The Dobanki Canopy Walk is included in all 2 Night 3 Day packages and longer. It is not visited on 1-day packages due to travel time. We recommend the 2N/3D package for the best Sundarbans experience.
Safety Rules on the Walkway
The walkway is fully fenced and Forest Department maintained. Visitors must stay within the fenced structure at all times. No food, no loud noise, no flash photography — both for visitor safety and to avoid disturbing the wildlife below.
Best Season
November to February — cool mornings mean deer and boar are active well into the day. The walkway is most atmospheric at dawn when mist hangs through the canopy.
